An exploration

My take on the Modification Vs. Mutialtion Debate

It is of my personal opinion that the term mutilation can be applied to body modification when it causes physical or psychological damage to the recipeint. Therefore, I feel that tattooing, piercing, scarification and body suspension are not forms of mutilation. (An example of mutilation would be scars and burns done out of self harm, which is very different than body modification.)

None of these procedures cause health threatening damage (unless performed improperly), and the only long term impairment associated with these mods are the negative stigmas that are often attached with them in western society. If someone is able to rationally explain why they wanted a specific mod, and how its an integral part of their life story-even if the reason dosen’t make sense to you- their decision should be respected.

Warning:

Bullshit video ahead.

I remember when this came out, I was so upset.

How DARE you compare body modification to reckless drinking.

What the f****? This is so ridiculous, I don’t even have the words right now,.

These creators of this video obviously feel that piercings are a form of mutilation.

Modification Vs. Mutilation

Now that we’ve explored different forms of body modification including, tattooing, piercing, scarification and suspensions, the question remains; where is the line between modification and mutilation? There is no real ”answer” to this question, for everyone has a different interpretation.

First, one must consider the definition of mutilation:

mu·ti·late

/ˈmyutlˌeɪt/ Show Spelled[myoot-l-eyt] Show IPA
verb (used with object), mu·ti·lat·ed, mu·ti·lat·ing.
1.
to injure, disfigure, or make imperfect by removing or irreparably damaging parts.

By this definition, do tattoos and piercings fall under this category? What about a suspension? Its obvious pain is involved, but the piercings heal and no permanent damage is done to the body. Would you consider extreme body building modification or mutilation? How about tanning, Botox treatments, hair dye, breast implants and cosmetic surgery? All of these procedures alter the natural state of our body for cosmetic, rituallistic or spiritual purposes. Is one reason more justafiable than the other?

I’m all for body modification, but..

Why Suspend?

A suspension is defined as the act of hanging the human body from hooks that have been put through temporary body piercings. The modern practice of ritual body suspension is derived from the Mandan tribe, who were the original practitioners of suspensions.

There are many different reasons to suspend. Suspensions can be used to reach a new level of consciousness, for meditation, as a rite of passage or simply for the endorphin rush.

Those at suspension.org offer this explanation:

“There are many different reasons to suspend, from pure adrenaline or endorphin rush, to conquering ones fears, to trying to reach a new level of spiritual consciousness and everything in between. In general, people suspend to attain some sort of “experience. Some people are seeking the opportunity to discover a deeper sense of themself and to challenge pre-determined belief systems which may not be true. Some are seeking a right of passage or a spiritual encounter to let go of the fear of not being whole or complete inside their body. Others are looking for control over their body, or seek to prove to themselves that they are more than their bodies, or are not their bodies at all. Others simply seek to explore the unknown.”
